Riots during Partition, bbc.co.uk and indiatimes

The Partition of India in 1947 was a catastrophic failure of governmental and societal responsibilities, as the hasty and ill-planned division led to the violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to safety, home, and identity. The lack of responsible governance resulted in immediate violence, mass displacement, and communal strife, while the long-term consequences cemented deep-seated animosities, geopolitical tensions, and recurring conflicts between India and Pakistan, shaping their fractured relationship to this day.

India-Pakistan Partition Explained, TRT World

"Every time the train stopped at station, we would all hold our breath, making sure not a single sound drifted out of the closed windows. We were hungry and our throats parched. From inside the train we heard voices travelling up and down the platform, saying, “Hindu paani (water),” and, from the other side, “Muslim paani.” Apart from land and population, even the water had now been divided”
Aanchal Malhotra, a partition survivor

"Partition tore India into three pieces. Disaster struck. There was East Pakistan, there was West Pakistan, and there was the rest of India. Millions of people were uprooted from their houses, tens of thousands massacred on both sides. It was one of the greatest mass migrations and killings in human history. "
Karan Singh, an author, in his book 'An Examined Life: Essays and Reflections by Karan Singh'

"We saw women jumping into wells to escape being dishonored.   The air was thick with cries, but no one came to help."
A survivor on the brutal violence against women

"I cried a lot. Now I think of it, I feel that something happened to all of us. It’s as if humanity had died. Everybody became a devil.”
Sardar Joginder Singh Kholi, a Sikh teenager during partition
